2.5 Marvin Nathan "Dick" Elton (1885-1946).
Marvin Nathan "Dick" Elton in an undated photo. Dick Elton was a road and bridge construction supervisor in the 1920s and 1930s, but this photo appears to have been taken sometime in the 1910s when Dick was first starting out. He's definitely dressed for work in this shot. Possibly Yolo County or any of the surrounding counties in north-central California.
I wish I knew the context of this undated photo of Dick Elton, but I don't. At first glance it looks like a typical police mug shot, but the shirt and tie give the shot away: this has to be a work related employee photo of him in his mid-40s (so circa 1932 we'll say) as a construction site supervisor. Height: 6' 1". He and Violet were living in Sacramento by 1930 (probably by late 1928 or early 1929), so the photo might have been taken somewhere in that locale. On the other hand, they were living in Alameda, Alameda County, California in 1928, so maybe the photo was taken in the East Bay Area around that time. Just as an aside, Dick worked as bridge construction superintendent in the Santa Cruz coastal mountains in 1936 north of Boulder Creek (Ben Lomond, Santa Cruz County, California) if you are familiar with the area.

Shroys and Wakefields circa 1905.
The mostly grown Shroy children in a family portrait circa 1905 or 1906 in the Portland, Oregon area. The photo as it relates to the Eltons is interesting for a number of reasons. Violette Viola Shroy, age about 15 or 16 (back row, standing with her brothers, third from left), would move down to Yolo Co., California in 1907 and later marry Marvin Nathan ("Dick") Elton (2.5) in March 1909. Robert Melvin Wakefield, age about 5 (boy seated to the far left in the front row), who was Violet Viola Shroy's nephew by way of her sister Martha M. ("Mattie")(Shroy) Wakefield (woman seated in the front row second from right), would eventually become Esther (Elton) Stannert-Elton's second husband -- almost 20 years her junior (m. Jun 1924, Vancouver, Clark Co., Washington) and move down to Sacramento, California later in the 1920s. Esther (Elton) Stannert-Elton (2.4) was Marvin Nathan ("Dick") Elton's older sister.

Portrait photo of Violet Shroy, 20 May 1908, on the occasion of her 19th birthday, Yolo or Woodland, California.
Violet moved to Yolo from Portland, Oregon sometime in 1907, and there met 2.5 Marvin Nathan "Dick" Elton either that year or the following year. The two would marry March 1909 and live with Dick's mother, the widow Mrs. Nancy M. (Garred/ Gerred) Elton, until 1910 when Nancy (Garred) Elton married C. G. Rambo.

Elton's, Shroy's, Murphy's, and Stackpole's, Woodland, California, very late 1913. Easily identifiable: 2.6 Clara Belle Elton (seated far left in white blouse, holding young boy), Violet (Shroy) Elton (center, holding baby), and 2.5 Marvin Nathan "Dick" Elton (seated in white shirt with suspenders). Speculation: Little boy being held by Clara could be Clara's nephew, Gerald C. "Jed" Elton (b. July 1911), Violet and Dick Elton's second born, which would make the baby being held by Violet (Shroy) Elton, Donald Lester Elton (b. Sept 1913), Violet and Dick Elton's third born, and the little boy seated directly in front with blond hair wearing light-colored overalls with broad, white collar (like his little brother, Jed), Marvin G. "Boy" Elton (b. Oct 1909). The woman seated to the right of Dick Elton is most likely his older
sister, 2.4 Esther (Elton) Stannert. The grandmotherly-looking woman seated on the right (third from right), has the same demeaner, and same round, barely-there, wire-rimmed glasses, as Nancy Margaret (Garred/ Gerred) (Elton) Rambo, but is more likely Violet (Shroy) Elton's friend, Mrs. Frank L. "Grace" Stackpole (b. 1869) (see Research page).

3.5.1 Marvin G. Elton "Junior" or "Boy" (1909-1993).
Marvin G. Elton ("Boy") and his mother Violet (Shroy) Elton pose for the camera shortly after his graduation ceremony from Sacramento Junior College circa 1930. Marvin would go on to marry Edna within the next two years and the two of them would then board a passenger ship for Hawaii in the mid-1930s . . . and stay . . . for the rest of their lives. (They did come home in late Sept 1950 for several weeks but returned to Hawaii by 30 Oct 1950). In 1958 they lived in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. Marvin and Edna lived first on Kauai before settling on Maui. Marvin worked as a short-wave radio operator. His brother Gerald Elton and his family came over in Nov 1945 to live for a time but wound up returning to the mainland.
3.5.3 Donald Lester Elton (1913-1976).
Undated photo of Donald Lester Elton dressed for work (1930s?). Don briefly played professional baseball (pitcher) during the 1936 season with the Danville Leafs, a Boston Red Sox farm team based in Virginia. He went on to become a police officer in Richmond, California from the mid- 1940s to the mid-1950s before moving to Sacramento, California.
Donald Lester Elton is photographed here with his High School baseball team, Sacramento, California, circa 1931. Donald would become a star pitcher for the team and later play for a minor league team in Virginia for the 1936 season.

Left. Violette M. Elton, age 5, at home in Grafton (= Knights Landing), Yolo Co., California (photo at left). Less than two years later, Violette, laying down a carpet of pink and orchid sweet pea pedals, would lead her Aunt Clara B. Elton's wedding procession at the home of another aunt, Esther (Elton) Stannert-Elton, June 7, 1922, in Sacramento, California. Violette's mother, Violet(te) (Shroy) Elton, Clara's sister-in-law, served as Clara's matron-of-honor.
Right Top. Violette "Vi" Elton (far right), age 9 or 10-ish I'm guessing, on an outing with her mother, Violette (Shroy) Elton (or parents if Dick Elton is behind the camera), sister Betty (third from right) (3.5.5), and cousin Beatrice Elton (second from right) (3.2.1), possibly in the Sierras circa 1923 (crop of title photo at top of this page).
Right Bottom. A couple of years earlier at some beach (if the Sierras, then Lake Tahoe, if the Pacific, then Sonoma Coast), 16 April (Easter), 1922. Violette Elton, age 12, in an end of school year snapshot with two girlfriends, Lincoln Park, City of Alameda, Alameda Co., California, 1928. I'd have to do some more research to tell whether the outfits the girls are wearing are school uniforms or from some other organization (like Camp Fire Girls or some similar organization). The pleated skirts suggest school uniforms.
Violette Elton in her senior year at Sacramento High School, Sacramento, California. This senior year portrait photo would have been taken circa 1932 or 1933. After high school Violette completed 2 years at Sacramento community ("Junior") College in Sacramento. Violette ("Vi") Elton's family moved to Sacramento from Alameda, Alameda Co., California, sometime between 1928 and 1930.

Violette ("Vi") (Elton) Flanders strikes an impressive pose in this undated photo, possibly from the late 1930s or early 1940s. Maybe Oakland, California if late 1930s. The Flanders lived in Paso Robles, California in 1940 but moved to Sacramento sometime in the early 1940s (Ed, Jr. was born in Sacramento, 17 Nov 1942).

(Elton) Werner, visits her cousin, 3.5.4 Violette (Elton) "Vi" Flanders and infant son (photo on right), "April 26, 1943" (Easter weekend), Sacramento, California. The mother and infant son in the photograph on the right remained unidentified until a match was made with photos of Vi (Elton) Flanders from about the same time period. Both photographs were from 3.6.2 Nancy C. Werner's collection.
3.5.5 Betty Marie Elton (1918-1932).
Betty Marie Elton, youngest of Dick and Violette (Shroy) Elton's five children, in a happier moment from her late childhood, 16 March 1931, Sacramento, California. A lengthy illness would take her life the following year at age 13. This photo must be from 16 March 1931, since she died 16 April 1932 in Sacramento.
Betty Marie Elton (3.5.5) poses with her older brother Donald (3.5.3) in this set shot circa 1923 or 1924.
