1.0 The Elton's -- 1913 -- Murphy's, Shroy's, and Stackpole's.
Original uncropped photo provided by jdf, Sept 2018, from her mother's collection: "The Elton's -- 1913 -- Murphy's, Shroy's, and Stackpole's. We will assume that jdf's mother (4.1.3.5 Helen (Elton) Forsythe, b. 1932) annotated the photo, but it could have been anyone from her generation or a previous generation. We will try to identify as many Eltons and other individuals in this photo as possible.

Undated photo of 2.6 Clara Belle Elton, b. Dec 1888, Cacheville (=Yolo), Calif. Source: 4.6.2.2 from his mother's (Nancy (Werner) Dulin, 3.6.2) collection. In 1910 Clara was living in Cacheville with her mother and stepfather (1910 US census); in 1920 she was on her own living in Woodland, CA (1920 US census).

Absolutely no doubt that the young woman in white blouse holding boy is Clara Belle Elton from about the same time period, 1913. So location is likely Yolo-Woodland-Sacramento CA area. Clara would be about 25 years old in this photo.

Young man seated in center of photo in white shirt with suspenders compares very well with photo of Dick Elton taken 10 years later on the left. In this photo from 1913 Dick Elton is about 28 years old.
This is a cropped undated photo of 2.5 Marvin Nathan "Dick" Elton probably taken in the years between 1913 and 1923. Also compares very well to photo above. Note especially the shape and placement of the ears, and the shape of his forehead compared to photo above. And the suspenders. Source: ancestry.com member.

Cropped photo of young woman with baby in center of photo, annotated "1913". Compares well with photos on the left. Violet (Shroy) Elton would be about 24 years old in this photo.
Have to assume that the baby is hers. If so, and given that the photo is annotated "1913", the baby would be 3.5.3 Donald Lester Elton, b. Sept 1913, Dick and Violet Elton's third child. And the photo would be from late to very late 1913. |

The focus here is on the two little blonde-haired boys and the baby in this cropped photo annotated "1913". The two little boys look like brothers and even have been dressed in similar or nearly identical outfits. We are already assuming that the baby is Violet and Dick Elton's third child 3.5.3 Donald Lester Elton, b. Sept 1913. Are the two boys the baby's older brothers, that is, are the two boys Violet (Shroy) and 2.5 Marvin Nathan "Dick" Elton's? Violet and Dick were married March, 1909 in Cacheville (=Yolo), CA.
Violet and 2.5 Dick Elton's first two children were:
3.5.1 Marvin G. Elton "Junior" or "Boy", b. 09 Oct 1909, Yolo Co., California, would have been 4 years old in December 1913.
3.5.2 Gerald Calvin "Jed" Elton, b. 01 Jul 1911, Yolo, California, would have been about 2 and a half years old in this photo.
The little boy seated in front, who looks to be about 4 or 5, could be Violet and Dick Elton's first born, "Boy" Elton (b. Oct 1909).
The little boy being held by 2.6 Clara Belle Elton seated left, who looks about 2 and a half to 3 years old, could be Violet and Dick
Elton's second born child "Jed" Elton (b. July 1911).

Is this the same woman 10 years earlier? Could be but it's hard to say. Proportions and relation of the eyes, nose, and mouth to each other look about the same. Chin is the same. Full, round face in both photos.

But who is this elderly woman? 2.6 Clara Elton's mother, Mrs. Nancy (Garred)(Elton) Rambo (b. 1856)? Mrs. Shroy? Mrs. Murphy? Mrs. Stackpole?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Violet (Shroy) Elton's mother was Sarah Ann (Moffett) Shroy (1857-1897), but she had died in Oregon 16 years before the above photo was taken in the Yolo-Woodland-Sacramento area. So it can't be Violet (Shroy) Elton's mother.
What about Mrs. Stackpole? To answer that we would need to figure out which Stackpole family we're talking about. There were many possibly-related Stackpole families just in California let alone the rest of the US.

Fortunately I happened to come across this brief snippet of social news from 1918 in the Sacramento Star, 18 Feb 1918 p.7 edition (source: newspapers.com). It directly ties a "Mrs. F. L. Stackpole of this city [Sacramento, CA]" to Mrs. Dick Elton a.k.a. Violet (Shroy) Elton of the title photo.
This is from the Sacramento Star, 16 Dec 1918 edition (source: newspapers.com). 2.5 Marvin Nathan "Dick" Elton and his wife Violet (Shroy) Elton lived in Sacramento for a time before moving back to Yolo. The birth of the baby girl refers to the birth of
Dick and Violet's fifth child, 3.5.5 Bettie Marie Elton, b. 14 Dec 1918 in Yolo, CA.
Dick and Violet's fifth child, 3.5.5 Bettie Marie Elton, b. 14 Dec 1918 in Yolo, CA.
Found this on newspapers.com from the Sacramento Bee, 19 Jan 1918, p.7 edition: photo of Mrs. F. L. Stackpole (right) as she appeared in late 1917 or in the first two weeks of 1918. This has to be Violet (Shroy) Elton (Mrs. M. N. "Dick" Elton)'s friend Mrs. F(rank) L(eslie) Stackpole (1865-1936) of Sacramento. A little further research revealed that her name was Lydia Grace "Grace" (Jordan) Stackpole (1869-1952), d. 1952 in Sacramento CA (ancestry.com). She was about 47 or 48 years old in the photo above (right). In 1913, that is, in our title photo, she would have been about 43 years old.
Are these two photos pictures of the same woman, L. Grace (Jordan) Stackpole, taken about 4 years apart? The photo on the left is of Grace Stackpole (b. 1869), age 47 or 48. The photo on the right is of the elderly woman in the title photo from 1913.
I think so. The light highlights on Grace Stackpole's hair in the photo on the left is a likely artifact of the lighting and the way newspaper photos were taken back then (1918). Either that or her hair is turning gray. Facial features and proportions really look the same for both women. And the wire-rim eyeglasses on both only add to the effect. Hair styles are slightly different however. Another caveat is that Grace Stackpole would have been 4 years younger in 1913 and the photo on right shows a woman in her later 40s or early 50s, but it would be a hard call to say for sure.

This is a cropped undated photo of Violet (Shroy) Elton's older brother Leslie Wesley Shroy (b. 1887) and his wife Clara Mabry. The couple were married in 1911 near Portland, Oregon. If the photo were taken around the time of their marriage, then Leslie Shroy would be about 24 years old in this photo (source: ancestry.com).
Above: Leslie Shroy in Yolo-Woodland Ca 1908.

The gentleman seated upper right in dress coat and tie matches the photo at left to a very good degree. Size and shape of the one ear which is visible, shape and relative proportions of the brow, eyes, nose, mouth, and chin all seem to match. We will have to provide evidence that Leslie Shroy was in the Yolo-Woodland-Sacramento, CA area around the time period of the title photo (so around 1913). In 1913 Leslie Shroy would have been 26 years old.

The newspaper clipping on the left from 3 Mar 1908, p.8 edition of the Woodland Daily Democrat shows that Leslie Shroy worked in the Yolo-Woodland CA area before he married Clara Mabry in Oregon in 1911. The article on the right from the 14 Feb 1916 p.6 edition of Woodland Daily Democrat shows that he and his wife moved to the Yolo-Woodland-Sacramento CA area after they were married in Oregon (source: newspapers.com) and had many friends in the area. Bonus names include Leslie and Violet's younger brother "Mart" (Merton Berton) Shroy (b.1892) and "Joe Murphy". Mr. and Mrs. Marvin ("Dick" and Violet) Elton and family were also at the party hosted by Leslie and Clara (Mabry) Shroy 14 Feb 1916. Other clips show that Leslie and Clara Shroy had moved to and were living in Yolo-Woodland-Sacramento CA by Jan 1916 (for example, left, lower clip: 1 Jan 1916 p.5 edition, Sacramento Star).
